Vicente Castellanos and the Regional Hispanic Community

Vicente Castellanos and the Regional Hispanic Community

In 1999, members of the Bay-Midland-Saginaw area Hispanic American community began this scholarship fund to assist students pursuing degrees at SVSU. They are proud of their Hispanic heritage and share the belief that education is the key to success and the building of a diverse American culture. Vicente Castellanos (pictured), a successful area businessman and community activist who passed away in 2017, supported the fund for many years.

Mr. Castellanos’ brother, Victor Luis, was a 1972 graduate of Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, who earned his B.S. Degree at University of Michigan and his M.D. Degree from Michigan State University. He completed his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Covenant-Cooper Campus) and was an emergency room doctor at Saginaw General Hospital (now Covenant-Harrison Campus). Dr. Castellanos wanted to become a writer, and was taking classes at SVSU at the time of his death in 1989, the result of an airplane crash. Dr. Castellanos’ family wishes to honor his dedication to education, excellence, achievement, and his Hispanic heritage by naming the scholarship in his honor.
