United Steel Workers of America (USWA)

United Steel Workers of America (USWA)

In 1936, the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) was formed. The union negotiated contracts with and organized workers at major companies until in 1942, the United Steel Workers of America was created by delegates to a SWOC convention in Cleveland, Ohio. USWA collective bargaining agreements set the pattern for hundreds of thousands of workers in dozens of industries, improving wages and benefits, securing equal treatment, and implementing grievance procedures. Today, there are more than 1,800 local unions throughout Canada, the United States, and the Carribean.

In 2007, the USWA Local 12075, based in Midland, Michigan, formed a partnership with Saginaw Valley State University to provide scholarships for students pursuing degrees in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at SVSU and established the USWA Local 12075 Annual Scholarship in Health Care. In that same year, they also established the USWA Local 12075 Annual Scholarship in Human Services to provide scholarships for students pursuing degrees in fields that improve the human condition.

The Executive Committee and membership believe in the importance of improving the quality of life for the people in our region and the need for highly trained health and human service professionals.
