SVSU Faculty Association

The original “Chrysallis” Center was intended to help non-traditional students, especially displaced homemakers, in achieving their educational goals. Founded by an SVSU graduate and faculty member, Rose Collamer Bauman, the Chrysallis Center was located in a small house on Pierce Road that is near the Observatory. Members met regularly for discussions about their classes, personal, and professional issues.

In addition to being supported by SVSU (then SVSC), the Center received grants from various organizations, including the Junior League. The Center continued until shortly after Professor Collamer Bauman’s retirement in 1989. The scholarship fund was established in 1999 to provide non-traditional students with the opportunity and incentive to develop to their fullest potential by providing scholarship assistance.

Much of the scholarship agreement was developed by Dr. Harriet Tillock, an SVSU Professor of Sociology who returned to college later in life to earn her Ph.D. and begin a new career teaching at the University level.
