Spence Brothers Construction Company and Family

Spence Brothers is a family-owned corporation, with headquarters in Saginaw. The company was founded in 1893 by brothers Hugh and Matt Spence, in response to the need to rebuild much of the East side of Saginaw, which had been lost in a devastating fire. During the Depression, the business survived by building government Post Office facilities throughout the eastern United States. Currently, Spence Brothers is led by third and fourth generation family members.

Spence Brothers is a statewide industry leader in Construction Management, Design/Build, and General Contracting services for major health care, recreational, educational, water/wastewater treatment plant and commercial/industrial facilities throughout Michigan. Spence Brothers built SVSU’s Regional Education Center, the addition to the Zahnow Library, the Crystal Lange College of Health and Human Services, the expansion of Curtiss Hall, and several other projects for the University.

The company established the scholarship fund in 1998 to assist students at SVSU who are majoring in Engineering. Herbert Spence, III, the Vice President and CFO, served on the SVSU Foundation Board of Directors and remains an Honorary Director. Mr. Spence’s wife, Kathryn Curtiss Spence, is a graduate of SVSU, and the daughter of one of SVSU’s founders, Charles Curtiss.

The Spence family and the company continue to support the scholarship to provide more opportunities for SVSU students.
