Professionally, Mike worked his way through his undergraduate education as a Customer Support Representative for Concentric Network Corporation (now XO Communications). Following his graduation, Mike was a classroom teacher in French and Social Studies for five years and later became the Market Research Call Center Supervisor at Morley Companies, Inc., Operations Manager for the SVSU Ryder Center and Adjuct Faculty in Political Science and Kinesiology before becoming Director of Career Services. Mike was also a highly regarded tennis coach with over 16 years of experience having coached at Bay City All Saints, Midland Dow, and SVSU. He earned several Regional Coach of the Year Awards and was named the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association Division II Boys State Coach of the Year in 2003 and ended his coaching career in 2010 after being named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year as the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at SVSU.

Academically, Mike received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in French (with a minor in Political Science) from SVSU in 1999 while also obtaining his Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate. In 2005, Mike earned his Master’s of Educational Leadership in Principalship from SVSU. He would go on to receive his Master’s of Arts in Communications and Multimedia from SVSU in 2008. Mike was also the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at SVSU from 2003-2010 and would be named GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2010.

Mike began his career in the Career Services department in the summer of 2006 as an Assistant Director. His unflinching work ethic, dedication to student success, and appreciation of the SVSU community would eventually lead him to being named Director of Career Services from 2010-2018. In this role, Mike was the top administrator for the SVSU On-Campus Student Employment program while also significantly increasing student and employer participation in SVSU’s Cooperative Education/Internship initiative. He also successfully oversaw the multiple Career Fairs that the University holds on a yearly basis, which grew exponentially during his time as Director.

Mike also is a decorated member of the United States Navy Reserve as a commissioned officer specializing in Human Resources. He served a tour of duty in Afghanistan from 2011-2012 as a Combat Advisor with the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) for which he received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service as well as the Navy-Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon for performance while under direct enemy fire. Today, Mike is a Lieutenant Commander of the United States Naval Academy. He was the 2021 recipient of the Class of 1951 Military Faculty Teaching Excellence Award and the William P. Clements award. Mike aids the English Department and serves as the Chair for the English Department Undergraduate and Honors Curriculum Committee.
