Macro-Michigan Pre-Technical Education Partnership (M3PEP)
The scholarship was established in 1997 with a gift from the Macro-Michigan Pre-Technical Education Partnership (M3PEP).
The mission of M3PEP was to encourage, support, and increase achievement in science and mathematics among economically disadvantaged and minority youth as preparation for entry into engineering and other selected technical disciplines, through efforts led by private industry in cooperation with educational establishments and other interest groups. The program was initiated in 1982 and provided summer workshops offering instruction in science, math, and engineering, as well as mentoring and other enrichment activities. The enrollment in the summer programs was approximately 500 students from the regional community.
Major financial support for the program came from the Dow Corning Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company, and Delphi Automotive Systems. Other benefactors included the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation, Consumers Energy, Ameritech, 3-M Scientific Anglers, and area educational institutions.
After some years of declining participation, M3PEP was dissolved in 1997 and the determination made that the program’s goals could be best served by endowing a scholarship program at SVSU with the remaining funds.
