The James B. Arnold Engineering Scholarship was established as a memorial to a chemical engineer and employee of The Dow Chemical Company who served as production plant superintendent prior to his retirement. Mr. Arnold was an active member in his community including service on the SVSU Board of Fellows. The Arnold Center, Inc. in Midland was named in recognition of his interest developing the full potential of individuals. Mr. Arnold was recognized by Saginaw Valley State University for his many contributions to the community and University by bestowing the Doctor of Humanities degree in 1975.

Mr. Arnold’s wife, Martha, established this scholarship and endowment fund to recognize and perpetuate her husband’s commitment to excellence in his work and devotion to the betterment of the human condition. Mrs. Arnold served on the SVSU Foundation Board of Directors, and was a former Chairperson of the Board. She continued to support the endowment fund, and left a bequest to it following her death in 2000.

The purpose of this endowment is to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to engineering students in financing their education at Saginaw Valley State University.
