International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 557

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) was founded in 1890 to ensure the fair treatment of workers in the electrical industry in the United States and Canada. At the time of their first convention in 1891, they had 286 members. At the time the scholarship was established in 1999, the organization had 750,000 members in more than 1,100 local unions. The IBEW’s constitution includes the following goal: “…to elevate the moral, intellectual, and social conditions of our members, their families and dependents, in the interest of a higher standard of citizenship.”

In that spirit, the scholarship was founded to assist deserving sons and daughters of IBEW members in attaining their educational goals at SVSU. The organization is now know as Saginaw Labor Management Cooperation Committee Local 557.
