Family and Friends of Florence "Goody" Peters

Florence “Goody” Peters was born in Winston Salem, N.C. on July 18, 1951. She was the daughter of Thomas Paul and Sarah “Sally” Ann Downing Cooke. She attended St. Cecilia’s Catholic School and graduated from Clearwater High School in 1969. She graduated from University of South Florida in 1973 with a B.S. in Special Education and Elementary Education. She taught special education at Paul B. Stevens Special Education Center from 1973-1980. She traveled extensively in Europe, South America, and the United States. On January 2, 1981, she married Larry Peters from Saginaw, Michigan. In her early years in Saginaw, she taught at the Melvin G. Millet Learning Center and Saginaw Township Community Schools.

During her time in Saginaw, she spent many years serving Parent-Teacher Organizations, various elementary, middle and high school volunteer organizations, and many local athletic booster groups in the Saginaw Township Community Schools. She served the Saginaw Township Soccer Association in many ways. She could always be counted on to tackle difficult projects and be a driving force in getting things done for students and staff. Her involvement in countless social and civic organizations was seemingly unlimited. Some of those included: The Junior League of Saginaw, various Bible Study groups, Putter Club, Garden Clubs, Giggle Gals, Curvettes/Crumbs, and the Breast Cancer Survivor Program.

Goody’s daughter, Sarah Peters, was a four-year member of the women’s soccer team at Saginaw Valley State University. During and following her daughter’s time at SVSU, Goody served SVSU athletics through the Cardinal Cabaret Auction planning committee, Athletic Advisory Board, and various community youth activities from 2008-2013. She was an unselfish, relentless, devoted, loyal and effective volunteer of her time and energy to these and other groups. She advised and helped SVSU Athletics shape and mold these events into conference and national award winning community engagement programs.

She is survived by her husband Larry of Saginaw, son Larry (Robby) Peters, Jr. of Grand Rapids, daughter Sarah, stepson Kirk, daughter-in-law April, stepson Tim, daughter-in-law Colleen, and grandsons Bry, Brandon & Bradley of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by brother, Thomas Cooke, sister-in-law, Marney McKinley, and brother, Christopher Cooke, of Santa Rosa, California.
