Dr. Richard H., Alma W., and R. Scott Gilmore

The Gilmore family has a long history of friendship and service to Saginaw Valley State University. Dr. Richard H. Gilmore was a member of the SVSU Board of Control from 1971-1987, and also served on the SVSU Foundation Board of Directors from 1971-1995. Dr. Gilmore was a charter member of the Annual Fund Committee and was appointed to the SVSU Board of Fellows in 1968.

He was recognized with an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1989, a Distinguished Service Medallion in 1991, and Honorary Alumnus status in 1996.

Dr. Gilmore practiced Orthodontics in Saginaw for thirty years, and held leadership positions and memberships in a number of professional and community organizations, including terms and President of the Saginaw County Dental Society and the Saginaw Downtown Rotary Club. Dr. Gilmore passed away in 1996.

Mrs. Alma W. Gilmore was a long-time member of the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum Board of Directors and the SVSU Annual Fund Committee. She was recognized as an Honorary SVSU Alumna. Mrs. Gilmore’s many community affiliations included the Junior League, Americna Red Cross (emeritus), Child and Family Service (emeritus), and board membership for the United Way, Dental Auxiliary of the State of Michigan, Rotary Club, Navy League, A&D Home Health Care, and the Saginaw Symphony. She also served on the Naval War College Foundation at Newport, Rhode Island.

Dr. and Mrs. Gilmore had one son and daughter-in-law, R. Scott and Victoria Gilmore (who passed away in 2014), and two granddaughters, Nichole and Melissa, both of whom attended SVSU.
