Dr. B. J. Humphreys and Mrs. Laura Humphreys

Dr. Humphreys earned his BA from SVSU in 1977 and has served on the SVSU Annual Fund Committee since its inception in 1977. He was elected to SVSU’s Foundation Board of Directors in 1980 and served as chairman from 1983 to 1985. He served as the Board’s secretary for many years, and remains an Honorary Director today. Dr. Humphreys was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Detroit College of Law in 1982 and received SVSU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985. Dr. Humphreys received the University’s Distinguished Service Medallion for his service to the University and community in 2000.

He has been active in several community organizations, including the Saginaw General Hospital Foundation and the hospital’s board of directors, the Visiting Nurse Association, United Way of Saginaw, Saginaw County Historical Society, Saginaw Kiwanis Club, Saginaw Junior Chamber of Commerce, Saginaw YWCA Building Committee and Legal Services of Saginaw County.

Mrs. Humphreys was recognized for her 5,000 hours of volunteer service to the Saginaw General Hospital Auxiliary. (Saginaw General Hospital is now Covenant’s Harrison Campus.)

Dr. and Mrs. Humphreys, who passed away in 2016, had 3 children: Sarah, a lawyer in Virginia, John a lawyer in practice with his father, and Susan, in New York. They had 4 grandchildren. Laura and B. J. Humphreys created this scholarship to help students achieve a college education.

Scholarships
